Eat Where the Locals Eat in Los Cabos

A curated guide for serious food lovers

There’s the resort side of Los Cabos you see on Instagram—and then there’s the one locals actually live (and eat) in. If you’re the kind of visitor who’s more interested in a cold michelada with perfect aguachile than stuffy fine dining or overpriced room service, this guide’s for you.

If you know us, you know one of our favourite pastimes is tracking down the best local restaurants—and revisiting them time and time again. Here’s where the South House team and locals in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are dining right now.

San José del Cabo

Pezgallo Coffee & Bar

Pezgallo Coffee & Bar is part third-wave coffee shop, part cocktail bar, and entirely perfect for slowing down. Open from 8 AM to 2 PM (closed Wednesdays), this sleek yet relaxed spot recently relocated from the plaza in downtown San José del Cabo to a fresh new location—and hasn’t missed a beat. The staff are known for their warm, friendly service that makes you feel like a regular—whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth.

Start your day with a velvety flat white and a plate of their famous chilaquiles or the Eggs Benedict, which just might be some of the best we’ve ever had. The grilled cheese is another hit and is far from ordinary—rich, cooked to perfection, taken to the next level if you ask for extra bacon, avocado, and huevo revuelto (highly recommended).

The food menu is small but intentional, with a brunch crowd that knows exactly what they came for. Grab a seat to read, write, or work in their expansive outdoor patio during the week—or come on a Saturday and join one of their casual ping pong tournaments for just 100 pesos.

Love Pezgallo, but wish you could swing by after lunch? Now you can. The establishment also has a new addition — Ito, their freshly opened day bar tucked right inside the restaurant. Now you can drop in during the afternoon for ping pong, casual drinks, and laid-back local gatherings from 2 PM to 8 PM.

Señora Cocina Cantina

If you’re looking for thoughtful food with heart, Señora Cocina Cantina should be high on your list. Set in a warm, lived-in space that feels like your tía’s modern loft, this spot leans into heritage Mexican cooking with a fresh, creative spin. The plating is elevated without being pretentious, and the flavors are bold—think mole-drenched short ribs, roasted seasonal veg, and cocktails that could rival anything in CDMX. The brisket tacos alone are well worth the visit alone—melty, smoky, and a must-try.

The crowd tends to skew local, with artists, designers, and food lovers filling tables late into the night. It’s a place you come to settle in, not rush through. Perfect for a slow dinner or drinks with someone over good conversation. Bonus: they even offer personalized lock boxes so you can stash your favorite bottle of tequila or mezcal—basically your own private bar, ready when you ar

El Marinero Borracho (The Drunken Sailor)

The kind of place your neighbour won’t tell you about because they don’t want it to get too busy, El Marinero Borracho is loud, unpolished, and all heart. You’re here for buttery shrimp, smoky grilled fish, saucy tostadas, and plates that lean generous. Micheladas are served in huge mugs, and the playlist feels like a family backyard party. It’s not trying to impress you, it just does.

Set in a two-storey palapa overlooking the marina in La Playita, this funky beachside cantina isn’t afraid to break the rules by dishing up fresh Mexican fusion. The Vietnamese-style seafood taco is a hit—light, crunchy, and totally unexpected. Pair it with a fresh-squeezed margarita, grab a seat at sunset, and don’t be surprised if you end up chatting with the table next to you. Locals and travelers alike keep coming back for the laid-back vibe and feel-good food.

Chik’n Doo

Chik’n Doo is the gourmet delivery baked chicken service in San José del Cabo you didn’t know you needed. Michelin-trained Chef Fabrice Guisset applies his fine-dining expertise to slow-roasted chicken, pairing all-natural garlic, rosemary, and olive oil with inventive marinades like Thai, Moroccan, and Al Pastor. The concise menu rounds things out with sides such as roasted baby potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and house-made sauces like romesco and jalapeño mayo.

Orders are made fresh—plan at least 30 minutes ahead (longer for groups)—and available for delivery in San José del Cabo from 11 AM to 3 PM or pickup from their downtown kitchen. Locals say the wait is worth it, with one calling it “quite literally the best chicken I have ever… EVER… had. Hands down.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Chef Fabrice has expanded into La Porchetteria, a seasonal Chik’n Doo pop-up introducing Italian porchetta to Los Cabos. Using his grandfather Luigi’s recipe, pork belly is marinated in wine, rosemary, garlic, and herbs, then roasted until the edges are perfectly crisp and the centre stays succulent. It’s served in casual, shareable formats—great stacked in a sandwich or plated family-style. And if you can’t wait for the next pop-up, you can still get Luigi’s Torta (made with that same family recipe) through Chik’n Doo’s regular ordering channels.

Taba BBQ

Southern-style BBQ in San José del Cabo? Yes, please. TABA BBQ has expanded from its popular Cabo San Lucas location, opening a second spot on Calle Mariano Abasolo near Los Kurricanes. The new location offers outdoor seating in a casual, open-air setting, serving the same smoked meats done with proper Texas flair here in the Baja.

Led by Chef Kris Kabush, a former fine dining chef, the menu features brisket, ribs, chili beans, coleslaw, house-made sauces, and their much-loved Sunday fried chicken special. Guests often highlight the welcoming staff and laid-back atmosphere that give TABA BBQ its neighborhood feel. There’s also a thoughtfully curated drink list including craft beers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options to round out the meal.

Café Abre Ojos

Café Abre Ojos is more than a neighborhood coffee shop — it’s a destination for coffee lovers who appreciate craftsmanship and community. They roast their own beans and pour each espresso with care, attracting locals who know the difference between good coffee and great coffee. The breezy patio is perfect for lingering with a book or watching the world go by, making it a popular morning or midday hangout.

The menu focuses on classic café fare with fresh, wholesome ingredients and a few creative twists. Whether you want a straight-up espresso or a well-balanced pour-over, this place nails it. It’s also a quiet hub for remote workers or creatives who want a calm but energizing atmosphere in the heart of San José.

Cuarenta Seafood

Cuarenta Seafood is a hidden gem that keeps things simple but outstanding with fresh, bright seafood options. The menu focuses on clean, citrusy mariscos with well-balanced flavors — think layered ceviche towers, perfectly assembled tostadas, and aguachiles that hit the right notes of heat and acidity without overpowering the seafood itself.

Though the space is minimal and unpretentious, the food draws a loyal local crowd who often send friends and family here for a no-frills seafood fix. Prices are fair, portions generous, and the service unpretentious but welcoming, making it one of San José’s best-kept secrets for mariscos lovers.

El Ahorcado (The Hangman)

El Ahorcado is a surf-inspired taqueria known for Baja-fusion flavors that stand apart from the typical downtown taco spots. Not far from the water in downtown San José, it’s popular among surfers and locals who want hand-made tortillas loaded with grilled proteins like fresh fish, shrimp, and beef cooked simply but flavorfully.

The menu leans into bold yet balanced seasoning, paired with cold beers that hit just right after an afternoon surf or a long day exploring. It’s casual, lively, and offers a true local vibe — no frills, just solid food and good company.

Mary Juana by Los Tres Gallos

Tucked into the heart of the Gallery District, Mary Juana is where locals go for tacos with soul and cocktails with a kick. It’s a casual but intentional taquería from the team behind Los Tres Gallos, and it’s quickly become a hotspot among those who live in the area. The open kitchen and leafy patio give it an inviting, low-key energy — perfect for post-art-walk evenings when you’re looking for somewhere that doesn’t feel touristy.

The tacos here are anything but ordinary. Standouts include the namesake Mary Juana taco made with grilled arrachera, melted cheese, and salsa negra, the crispy pastor negro, and the catch of the day, all served on fresh corn tortillas. Vegetarians are looked after too with delicious plant-based options. Drinks are just as strong — the mezcalitas, hibiscus margaritas, and spicy Bloody Marys are worth coming for alone. Arrive close to opening (5 PM) to snag a good table before it gets busy, and expect to spend around MX$300–500 per person with drinks.

Aguachiles El Moky

When you want seafood that packs a punch, Aguachiles El Moky delivers. Their aguachiles come in several levels of spice—choose wisely—and the tostadas are unapologetically messy and stacked high with shrimp, crab, or octopus. It’s a no-frills, family-run neighborhood spot that’s always buzzing. Cash only, always fresh, and one of the best mariscos spots in town

Cynthia Fresh Cabo

If you’re looking to reset between tacos and tostadas, Cynthia Fresh Cabo is the answer. Known for nourishing breakfasts, grain bowls, and cold-pressed juices, this place proves healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. It’s the kind of café where you’ll see locals post-workout or running errands, grabbing something fresh and fast.

Tucked into the quieter streets of San José del Cabo, it’s a reliable go-to for those who appreciate wholesome food on-the-go. Think colourful acai bowls, protein-packed smoothies, and balanced plates that feel good without feeling restrictive. You’ll still find satisfying options like burritos al pastor and breakfast wraps with plenty of flavor. Whether you’re fuelling up for the day or winding down after a surf session, Cynthia hits that sweet spot between comfort and clean eating.

Lateral Cabo

Lateral is a bright, modern taco spot right on Paseo de Los Cabos that locals swear by. They also have a relatively new location in East Cape in Fonatura. Open daily from early morning through late evening, it’s just as good for breakfast tacos as it is for a late-night craving. The fish taco and al pastor get particular praise for their flavor and balance, but the menu offers more than just the usual — chorizo quesadillas and beef tongue tacos round out the lineup with depth and creativity.

A self-serve salsa bar with four house-made sauces means you can customize every bite, and the Topo Chico on tap keeps things fresh and local. The vibe is clean and casual-chic, with enough style to feel special but no need to dress up. Whether you’re a local grabbing a quick lunch or a visitor staying near the hotel corridor, this spot hits the mark without overdoing it.

Salón Noción

Salón Noción is where Cabo’s food and wine scene takes a thoughtful turn. This minimalist hideaway is part kitchen lab, part natural wine bar, with a hyper-curated menu of small plates that lean into fermentation, seasonal produce, and subtle surprises. The lighting is low, the playlist is well chosen, and the overall vibe invites slow, intentional dining.

It’s the kind of place where you might talk pairings with your server-turned-sommelier or discover a wine you’ve never seen before. Expect things like sourdough with house-made koji butter, or pickled local veg with creamy, umami-rich sauces. Ideal for a quiet night with someone who appreciates nuance, or for solo diners who love sitting at the bar and savoring something unique, one small bite at a time.

Playa Bruja Mariscos

Playa Bruja Mariscos isn’t near the water, but that doesn’t stop it from serving some of the best seafood in the region. The menu is tight and punchy, focusing on ceviches, grilled fish, and expertly charred octopus. Flavors are bold—especially in the aguachile and tostadas—and they know how to balance acid, heat, and freshness without overcomplicating anything.

This spot still feels like a local secret, though the word is starting to get out. On weekends, expect every table full and a wait that’s absolutely worth it. Locals come for the food—just high-quality mariscos, cold beer, and a crowd that knows exactly what they came for. A solid pick for those who care more about what’s on the plate than the view behind it.

Bar Pascal

Bar Pascal is a new concept from the owners of Flavia (some of the best pizza in town), and it’s the kind of cocktail bar you stumble into once but can’t stop coming back to. Hidden away in the Art District, it has the moody charm of an old-school speakeasy—dim lighting, heavy drapes, thoughtful design, and drinks that are as extravagant as they are beautiful.

Expect house cocktails with layered flavor profiles, vintage glassware, and the kind of crowd that works in hospitality or the arts. It’s especially popular on industry nights and after-hours when the city’s creatives and off-duty chefs come to unwind. There’s no beach view and no blaring playlist—just sharp drinks, soft shadows, and a bartender who knows their spirits inside and out.

Cabo San Lucas

Art & Sushi Cabo

Arts & Sushi Cabo is our go-to for Japanese fusion. This is one of the few ever-present restaurants in the Cabo San Lucas marina, which also just so happens to be Karim’s dad’s restaurant. This isn’t your average fusion spot — the focus here is on balanced, quality food. Rolls are inventive but never overdone, with fresh fish and house-made components that elevate each bite. Their sashimi is reliably pristine, and their specials board often includes seasonal surprises like uni or local tuna.

The vibe is relaxed and community-oriented, doubling as a gallery space showcasing local artists. Whether you’re sitting at the sushi bar or dining al fresco, there’s a sense that everything is curated — from the plating to the playlists. A go-to for locals who appreciate good fish and good atmosphere, without needing the bells and whistles. You can also catch them at local event concessions around town, like the Cabo Tennis Open.

Tacos Gardenias

Known for serving the best shrimp and fish tacos in Cabo since 1980, Tacos Gardenias is a casual spot just a block from Médano Beach. South House Real Estate’s Karim is a regular here — his go-to order is the beer-battered shrimp and chicharrón tacos. The menu also has options like cochinita pibil, octopus, and more. It’s a build-your-own style setup with a toppings bar stocked with cabbage, salsas, and lime, and the service is always fast and friendly.

The space is low-key and always buzzing—popular with locals, beachgoers, and anyone chasing fresh seafood without the touristy feel. Beyond tacos, they do a killer molcajete and solid ceviche. It’s open all day, and it hits the spot whether you’re rolling in after the beach or fueling up before a night out.

Bonachón Baja Sur

Bonachón Baja Sur takes street food seriously, especially when it comes to their asados. Their menu features crispy tacos filled with beef, prawns, octopus, and more. Each plate is served with your choice of housemade salsa, ranging from mild to eye-wateringly spicy, plus fresh guacamole that perfectly balances each dish. It’s straightforward, satisfying, and a go-to spot after a day at Medano Beach or whenever you want authentic, bold flavors.

The kitchen is led by Cesar Pita, executive chef and taco visionary, alongside an expert cocktailologist mixing up creative drinks, and an entire team that’s passionate about what they do. From Tuesday to Friday, 4 PM to 6 PM, enjoy their happy hour deals with 2-for-1 flavored margaritas and 3-for-2 tacos—an ideal way to start the evening. Known for its exclusive cocktail menu and Baja comfort food, Bonachón is worth the trip if you’re in El Tezal or nearby.

The Fish Sushi

If you know, you know. The Fish Sushi has been quietly building a loyal following thanks to its clean flavours, fresh fish, and no-fuss approach to Japanese fare. Located near a few minutes from the Cabo San Lucas marina, it’s not the flashiest sushi joint in town—but that’s part of the appeal.

The space is bright, casual, and friendly, with counter seating and fast service. It’s ideal for a quick weekday lunch or a relaxed dinner when you want something light but satisfying. Regulars love the consistency, reasonable prices, and rolls that strike the right balance between classic and creative. Bonus: they don’t overload their sauces, and you can always count on the fish being fresh.

Hoja Santa

Hoja Santa offers a unique twist on a variety of popular Mexican dishes. It features a peaceful courtyard with plants and good energy that makes it feel more like an outdoor gathering than a restaurant. The menu leans seasonal and thoughtful: you might find chilaquiles with cabeza de res, quesabirrias oozing with queso, or tropical French toast topped with mango and dulce de leche.

They also serve colourful smoothies and delicious breakfast foods that perfectly complement the other thoughtful dishes on the menu. Open from 8 AM to 1 PM, it’s a favorite among Cabo’s foodies and a refreshing break from the loud, beachy energy elsewhere.
